Every hour it sits, more of it soaks in
Extraction is the first stage of any water damage job: getting the free water out of the house before it climbs the drywall, swells the cabinet bases and saturates the carpet pad. The less water left behind, the shorter and cheaper the drying that follows.
Contractors use submersible pumps for deep water in garages and sunken rooms, then portable or truck-mounted extractors with floor wands for carpet and tile. Carpet can sometimes be saved if it is extracted quickly and the pad is replaced. Laminate and engineered wood usually cannot.

Right now
What to do first
- Stop the source: the fixture valve, the washing-machine valves or the main shutoff, if it is safe.
- Keep out of standing water near outlets, cords or appliances.
- Lift furniture onto foil or blocks and carry rugs, electronics and papers out of the wet area.
- Don't use a household vacuum on water. A wet/dry shop vac is fine for small spills on tile.
- Take photos and video before anything is moved or thrown away.
What water extraction involves
What a restoration contractor should do, so you know what to expect and what to ask.
Pumping deep water
Submersible pumps clear inches of water from garages and low rooms before the extractors go in.
Carpet and pad extraction
Weighted extraction tools press water out of carpet and pad. The pad is usually replaced; the carpet sometimes stays.
Tile and hard floors
Squeegee wands pull water off tile, vinyl and wood, including out of grout lines and from under cabinet toe kicks.
Checking where it went
Moisture readings around the wet area show whether water reached the walls, the next room or under the flooring.
Clean or contaminated?
Water from a supply line is handled differently from water that came up a drain, out of a toilet or in from the yard.
Handing over to drying
Once the free water is gone, air movers and dehumidifiers take over. Extraction alone does not make a house dry.

Costs
What water extraction typically costs
| Job | Typical range | What moves the price |
|---|---|---|
| Small area, clean water | $300 – $1,200 | Square footage, carpet or tile |
| One or two rooms, carpet and pad | $1,000 – $3,000 | Pad removal, furniture moving |
| Deep water or several rooms | $2,500 – $6,000+ | Pumping, contamination, after-hours work |
These are planning ranges for typical jobs, not quotes or surveyed local averages. The contractor prices your job after an inspection. Plumbing, roofing, AC repairs and rebuilding are usually extra.
Questions
Water Extraction: common questions
Can wet carpet be saved?
Often, if it is clean water and extracted within a day or two. The pad underneath usually has to go. Carpet soaked by sewage or by water that came in from outside normally can't be saved.
How long does extraction take?
A room or two usually takes an hour or two. The drying afterwards takes days, not hours.
The puddle is gone. Do I still need extraction?
If the water soaked into carpet, pad or under the flooring, you need at least a moisture check. A dry-looking tile floor can hide wet drywall along every wall it touched.
